Secret Satanists Session Two
Published Apr 21, 2016Secret Satanists is fronted by Jeff van Helvoort of Teenage Kicks fame (previously Ulysses and the Siren, Cain and Abel) and rounded out by Jared Macintyre on bass and Riley Simpson on drums. Session Two is the band's second release, a well-balanced combination of garage rock, light-hearted punk and some shoegaze-y type fuzz. It's a five-track excursion composed of the kind of music you'll want to listen to on repeat, especially during those windows-rolled-down summertime drives.
This second of a four-EP rollout begins with "Youth Eats You," a noisy track that lays down the law with a dialled yet crass guitar tone and a solid backbone from the rhythm section. Lyrically, the track seems to confront van Helvoort's early struggle to land a working band. "Darkness" contrasts heavier instrumentation with lighter vocals, and leads well into faster tune "Fuck Me, I'm Vacant." Mundane and redundant in both sound and form, "Lines of Treason" is the one skippable track, but "Ghosts" is a tantalizing conclusion, ending Session Two on a note that will make the listener wish it didn't end here.
