McDonald's BTS Meal Causes Total Chaos in Indonesia — and Maybe a New COVID Hotspot
Published Jun 10, 2021Over a dozen Indonesian McDonald's locations were forced to temporarily close down over COVID-19 fears — thanks to a wave of orders from BTS-obsessed fans.
The fast-food chain's in-demand BTS-branded meal — which includes an order of chicken nuggets, fries, a drink and sweet chilli and Cajun sauces — caused mayhem for workers and delivery people after launching officially in the pacific island country yesterday (June 9).
"We temporarily closed four of six McDonald's stores here in Semarang for a couple of days," Jakarta's public order agency head, Fajar Purwoto, said, according to news agency AFP. "I don't want Semarang to be in the COVID-19 red zone again."
Photos of the crowded conditions that the popular meal has caused amid the buying frenzy speak for themselves:
McDonald's Indonesia associate director of communication, Sutji Lantyka, echoed Purwoto's remarks, explaining that the closure "is to avoid crowds in the drive-throughs and queues for delivery purchases," amid growing concerns about a resurgence of COVID-19.
Along with mega-fans' desire to get their chompers on a coveted BTS meal, other K-Pop speculators have been using the launch to flip the nuggies and their sauces online for a pretty penny.
In related news, someone just sold a Chicken McNugget shaped like a character from Among Us from a BTS meal for $100,000 USD on eBay.
