TIFF Reveals List of 2021 Galas and Special Presentations
Yes, they managed to get 'Clifford the Big Red Dog'
Published Jul 21, 2021The 46th annual Toronto International Film Festival will take place this September, and the festival has now shared its Gala and Special Presentation film titles.
Running from September 9 to 18, TIFF has now added a ton of titles to its initial announcement last month. The newly announced slate includes Stephen Chbosky's film adaptation of the Tony-winning adolescent musical Dear Evan Hansen (starring Ben Platt, Amy Adams and Julianne Moore), which will be screened for the opening night gala.
Meanwhile, Zhang Zimou's "love letter to cinema," One Second (starring Liu Haocun, Zhang Yi and Fan Wei) — about a man who escapes a labour camp to reunite with his daughter — will be the closing night film.
Other newly added highlights from the selections include Michael McGowan's film adaptation of Canadian novelist Miriam Toews' bestselling All My Puny Sorrows, along with the Antonio Banderas- and Penélope Cruz-helmed satire of filmmaking Official Competition, Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Victorian-era eccentric artist in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield as televangelists the Bakkers in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Antoine Fuqua's 911-dispatch thriller The Guilty led by Jake Gyllenhaal, and Justine Bateman's Olivia Munn-starring Violet.
And, of course, there's Clifford the Big Red Dog. No presentation could be more special than that.
As previously reported, TIFF will also include Denis Villeneuve's much-delayed Dune, as well as Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho and the Alanis Morissette documentary Jagged. There will also be screenings of Kenneth Branagh's Belfast, Danis Goulet's Night Raiders, Céline Sciamma's Petite Maman (her follow-up to Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Theodore Melfi's The Starling, Dave Wolley and David Heilbroner's Dionne Warwick: Don't Make Me Over, Antoine Fuqua's The Guilty, and the Naomi Watts-starring Lakewood.
According to the TIFF website, the festival's full presentation schedule will be shared by August 24. In the meantime, view the list of TIFF 2021's Galas and Special Presentations below.
As previously announced, TIFF will be running about half as many films as it did in its pre-COVID editions. Face masks will be required and theatre capacities will be reduced.
