Safdie Brothers Are Bringing a Film About Pee-wee Herman Actor Paul Reubens to HBO
The two-part documentary is being directed by Matt Wolf
Published Mar 11, 2021Beloved Pee-wee Herman actor Paul Reubens is about to become the subject of a new HBO documentary, and it's coming with the help of Uncut Gems filmmakers the Safdie Brothers.
While the doc doesn't have a title just yet, it will be directed by Matt Wolf (Spaceship Earth/Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell).
As The Hollywood Reporter reports, it will be a two-part documentary and is described as "a kaleidoscopic portrait told in two parts" and "traces the life of the imaginative artist behind one of pop culture's most celebrated and unlikely icons: Pee-wee Herman."
Josh and Benny Safdie will produce the doc with their Elara partner Sebastian Bear-McClard, as well as Joker producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff.
"I've been working with HBO since they were called Home Box Office! I'm honoured and excited to continue my long history there. I love HBO, but I'm not going to marry them," Reubens said in a statement.
Early last year, it was reported that the Safdie Brothers were working on a darker Pee-wee Herman film, though it doesn't appear the documentary is that same project.
"I've referred to it as the Valley of the Dolls Pee-wee movie," Reubens said at the time. "It's about fame."
In the film, Pee-wee reportedly emerges from prison to become a famous yodeller, who then pivots into movie-making. Unfortunately, drug and alcohol addiction turn him into the character.
As of yet, there's no firm word on when Matt Wolf's documentary will arrive, but consider us stoked.
