Me Mom and Morgentaler Reunite to Cover the Specials' 'Racist Friend'
Montreal third wave ska outfit Me Mom and Morgentaler have reunited to put their spin on a song from the Specials, ahead of a virtual festival appearance in their home city this weekend.

While the members of the Canadian outfit are now scattered across the globe, the group have emerged from their respective home studios with a cover of the Specials' "Racist Friend" which you can hear below.

For those unfamiliar, the song hinges on a very salient point: "If you have a racist friend / Now is the time, now is the time for your friendship to end." The band learned of the song's antiracist message around the time they were practicing some of their own, giving neo-nazi skinheads the boot from their early Montreal shows in the late 1980s.

An accompanying video for the cover, co-created by drummer Sid Santiago and longtime friend Rosella Tursi, will be screened as part of the virtual MTL vs Racisme festival, set to take place September 12 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET. The event will raise funds for Montreal organizations Head and Hands, Hoodstock and Resilience Montreal, with further fest details available here.

Formed in 1988, Me Mom and Morgentaler quickly gained a reputation for amped-up live shows, leading to the release of debut EP Clown Heaven and Hell in 1991. Debut studio album Shiva Space Machine arrived in 1993, and was followed by 1994 live album We Are Revolting ahead of members parting ways in 1995.
