Published Aug 21, 2019While his credit as co-producer on Operators' recent LP Radiant Dawn invokes a bygone era of tech, the artist formerly known as Napster Vertigo will now be known as Legal Vertigo when it comes time to release debut album Tragic Future Film Star later this year.
Ahead of that effort's November arrival through Dine Alone Records, Exclaim! is proud to premiere "At the Brasserie," a song written in tribute to Montreal scene staple Brasserie Beaubien. The venue counts Ought, TOPS and Majical Cloudz among the acts that have graced its stage.
If you haven't been, Legal Vertigo's accompanying video will surely serve as a suitable venue primer. Styled as a low-budget infomercial, the clip gives you a look at all that Brasserie Beaubien has to offer.
"The Brasserie Beaubien is part of an accidental evolution," Legal Vertigo explained to Exclaim! "It used to be where Hell's Angels, Legionnaires, and neighbourhood locals would go to unwind, scheme, fight, and find love (etc.). Circumstance has mysterious 'intentions.' In this case, as in many others (in many other cities) a place that once thrived for some has begun to thrive for others."
He explained the local impact further as follows:
In this particular case, the former biker bar has become the hub of a thriving local arts scene with aspiring rock bands, comedians, drag dancers, poets, singer-songwriters, and seemingly anyone who wants to be on a stage (special thanks to Annie, James, & Julian). It is an institution of Montreal where major promoters sometimes put on events and 'successful' acts throw surprise events or try out new material. And let's not forget, of course, the typical weekday show with unmade artists, weirdos and outlaws.
The Brasserie could have gotten dusty, shut down, and been replaced by who-knows-what. Instead, it's vibrant, and has created a new arts and performance scene of its own with regulars and politics and drama and comedy. The bar recently even invested in some new sound equipment! For much more information, go to 73 Beaubien Est, Montreal, Quebec anytime between 3 p.m. & 3 a.m.
