Lloyd was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in January 2019, later discovered to be the result of metastatic lung cancer that had also spread to his liver, spine and jaw. A GoFundMe campaign was later started to provide financial support to Lloyd, his wife Vanessa and their then-one-month-old son Weston.
Since Lloyd's death, numerous co-stars have paid tribute, including Scrubs lead Zach Braff, who wrote on Twitter, "Rest In Peace to one of the funniest actors I've ever had the joy of working with. Sam Lloyd made me crack up and break character every single time we did a scene together. He could not have been a kinder man. I will forever cherish the time I had with you, Sammy."
Sam Lloyd was born in Weston, VT, in 1963, and was the nephew of Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd. In addition to his recurring role on Scrubs, Sam had made notable appearances on Night Court, Seinfeld, 3rd Rock from the Sun, The West Wing, Desperate Housewives, Cougar Town (reprising his Scrubs role), The Middle and Modern Family, along with roles in films including Flubber and Galaxy Quest.
See select tributes to Lloyd from friends and collaborators — including Scrubs and Cougar Town creator Bill Lawrence — below.

Thinking a lot about Sam Lloyd today. (Ted). Truly such a kind, sweet guy. He will be missed by so many. pic.twitter.com/JRzlLKhqHB— Bill Lawrence (@VDOOZER) May 1, 2020
Oh Sam...I feel so lucky I got the chance to know and work with you. You were the the kindest, funniest man. Sending so much love to your family. Rest In Peace. pic.twitter.com/knwULwYpIb— Sarah Chalke (@sarahchalke) May 2, 2020
So sad to hear the news about Sam Lloyd. Sam was one of the warmest, funniest and most generous actors I've ever worked with. I loved getting to sing with him and it was an honor to play his girlfriend on Scrubs. He will be so missed. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/FcFEEybPMM— Kate Micucci (@katemicucci) May 2, 2020
This hurts my heart. Sam Lloyd was a massive talent and the kindest man. He was so supportive and even came out to act in some of my silly plays in a small theater at midnight. I once cast him in a LOST/CASTAWAY parody where he didn't hesitate to make out with a basketball. https://t.co/PUSVbk7qir pic.twitter.com/ovlwoCjkIi— Jenelle Riley (@jenelleriley) May 1, 2020
