A sewage treatment plant in Connecticut has been named after John Oliver, months on from the comedian catching the attention of officials in the city of Danbury with a rant on Last Week Tonight.

In August, Oliver took a few shots at Danbury as part of a discussion on racial discrimination in Connecticut jury selections. "Fuck Danbury!" he said at the time. "From its charming railway museum to its historic Hearthstone Castle, Danbury, Connecticut, can eat my whole ass."

Oliver continued: "I know exactly three things I know about Danbury. USA Today ranked it the second-best city to live in in 2015, it was once the centre of the American hat industry, and if you're from there, you have a standing invite to come get a thrashing from John Oliver, children included. Fuck you."

The comedian's comments prompted a video response from Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, who pledged the rename the city's sewage plant after Oliver "because it's full of crap just like you, John."

Oliver then offered to donate $55,000 to local charities if the town followed through with the renaming, which Boughton accepted. On Sunday (October 18), Last Week Tonight chronicled Oliver's achievement with a physically distanced ceremony, for which the comedian donned a protective suit, gloves and plastic helmet.

"This place takes the worst that humanity can produce, and transforms it into something that we can live with," Oliver explained. "And now more than ever, there's something inspirational in that, because at the end of this awful, awful year, what could be more important than evidence that, if we want to, we can come together, overcome our differences and sort our shit out."
